1889
Wing Sang Building
Built by Yip Sang in 1889, this began as a modest, two-storey warehouse at 51 E Pender Street with a painted a banner along the top: Wing Sang & Co. “Wing Sang” in Chinese means “everlasting” — expressing an aspirational hope to live and thrive.

1901
Wing Sang Building Expands
Yip Sang extends his storefront, constructing a new building that is three times the width of the original. This expansion not only accommodates his growing business operations but also includes what would become the historic School Room.

1910s - 1970s
a place for community
The Wing Sang Building remained an active hub within the Vancouver Chinatown community, serving as a gathering place for families, businesses, and cultural activities. Its presence reflected the resilience and vitality of the Chinese Canadian community through generations.

2022
acquiring the Wing Sang Building
The Chinese Canadian Museum Society of British Columbia acquired the Wing Sang Building, marking a significant milestone in the preservation and celebration of Chinese Canadian history. This acquisition laid the foundation for transforming the space into a permanent home for the Chinese Canadian Museum.

2023
Chinese Canadian Museum
On July 1st, 2023, the Chinese Canadian Museum celebrated its grand opening at the historic Wing Sang building on 51 E. Pender St in Vancouver. In October 2024, the museum was presented the Governor's Award by the National Trust For Canada for its work.

1889 Trading Co. Established
A subtle, stylish way to share Chinese Canadian culture. Established by the Chinese Canadian Museum, 1889 Trading Co. showcases books, art, and objects by Chinese Canadian creators—thoughtful mementos of culture, history, and place.
